What is Ngā Kaihāpai?

Ngā Kaihāpai rōpū is a by Māori, for Māori health and wellbeing service within Habit Health - designed for Māori, whānau and communities across Aotearoa.

Our team works alongside individuals and whānau to support recovery, wellbeing and participation in everyday life, using kaupapa Māori approaches that reflect tikanga, whakapapa and lived experience. Culturally grounded care matters because it supports access, trust and better outcomes for Māori — recognising that connection to culture, whānau and identity plays a vital role in hauora.

Ngā Kaihāpai is part of Habit Health's wider commitment to equity, cultural safety and improving access to care across Aotearoa.

Our kaupapa and values

Our approach is grounded in:

Manaakitanga

Care, respect and dignity for people and whānau.

Whanaungatanga

Building trusting, meaningful relationships.

Tino rangatiratanga

Supporting self-determination and choice.

Kotahitanga

Working together toward shared wellbeing goals.

Wairuatanga

Recognising the spiritual dimensions of wellbeing.

These values guide how we listen, support and walk alongside whānau.

Our Māori Responsiveness Strategy - Ngā Pou Oranga - guides how these values are brought to life in practice.

nga pou oranga

Three pou: our strategic pillars

Our work is guided by the three pou from within Ngā pou oranga - these strategic pillars help turn kaupapa Māori values into everyday practice. These pou shape how Ngā Kaihāpai supports whānau, works with communities and contributes to equitable health outcomes for Māori.

Te Pou Tangata
People Pillar

This point grounds our work in a strong understanding of Māori in Aotearoa - recognising both the historical context and the lived practice of tikanga Māori today. People sit at the heart of our strategy: without whānau accessing our services there is no service to deliver, and without skilled, culturally capable kaimahi, those services cannot be delivered well.

Te Pou tū Māori
Maori Standing Proud

We acknowledge the health inequities created by systemic racism and are committed to addressing them through continuous learning and tailored service delivery. Māori are able to access our services feeling safe, heard, and supported to stand proudly as Māori. We ask why, how, and what we can do to help - creating spaces where people can be themselves. This commitment extends to all minority communities across Aotearoa, ensuring care is culturally safe, respectful, and responsive for everyone.

Te Pou Mana Taurite
Equity through Partnerships

To meaningfully address the challenges before us, we must work in partnership. We are committed to building authentic, high-trust relationships with iwi, Māori and Māori health providers - sharing the load as we move forward together. Central to our strategy is a dedicated focus on enabling people and organisations in their mahi, with wellbeing placed firmly at the centre.

Together, these pou guide how Ngā Kaihāpai brings kaupapa Māori values to life in practice.

How Ngā Kaihāpai supports hauora

How Ngā Kaihāpai supports hauora

Ngā Kaihāpai rōpū support is governed by its name, the supporters/champions/uplifters of Ngā pou oranga. By championing our Māori responsiveness strategy they are able to provide support that recognises wellbeing as holistic and interconnected.

This may include:

  • Culturally grounded wellbeing and recovery support
  • Whānau-centred engagement and planning
  • Support navigating health, work and community systems
  • Collaboration with other health and community services

Support is shaped around the needs, goals and context of each person and their whānau.

Working alongside whānau and communities

Ngā Kaihāpai rōpū works in partnership with whānau, hapū, iwi and community organisations, where appropriate, recognising that wellbeing is strengthened through connection and collective support.

We take time to understand what matters to each person and whānau and we work at a pace that feels right - building trust, understanding and shared direction.

Ngā Kaihāpai is one part of Habit Health’s wider commitment to culturally safe, inclusive and responsible care.
