What is persistent pain?

Pain that lasts longer than expected healing time (typically 6-12 weeks) is often influenced by more than tissue injury alone.

Factors may include:

  • Muscle weakness or deconditioning
  • Nervous system sensitivity
  • Sleep disruption
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Reduced movement due to fear of flare-ups
  • Workplace or lifestyle demands

Effective pain management addresses these drivers together.

Frequently asked
questions

Can Physiotherapy help persistent pain?

Yes. Persistent pain often responds well to structured Physiotherapy and graded rehabilitation that rebuilds strength, mobility and confidence.

Who would I see for pain management?

Your care team depends on your needs. Most people start with a physiotherapist, who will assess your pain and develop a plan. For more complex or persistent pain, you may also work with rehabilitation specialists, health coaches and, where relevant, counselling support — all coordinated through Habit Health.

How long does pain management take?

Recovery time varies depending on duration and complexity. Most people benefit from a structured programme over several weeks.

Is persistent pain covered by ACC?

You may be eligible for ACC funding if your pain has been lingering for 3+ months and was triggered by an injury or accident. We can help determine eligibility.

Do I need a referral?

It depends on how you're accessing care. EAP or private clients can book directly — no referral needed. ACC-funded pain management requires a referral from an allied health professional, such as a GP or one of our own clinicians. If you're not sure whether you need a referral, contact us and we'll help you find the right pathway.
